Samuel latest to be tagged
The New England Patriots have tagged CB Asante Samuel. This removes one of
the top free agents from the board, and will likely alter the draft plans
for the Patriots. We can still see New England targeting a corner on day one
of the draft, however. As predicted in the
War Room Report Free Agent Preview, Samuel
joins Lance Briggs as the latest top star to be franchised.

Briggs tagged by the Bears.
Chicago made an effort to retain linebacker Lance Briggs by placing the
franchise tag on him. Briggs was integral in leading the Bears to the Super
Bowl, and his return should help the defense remain in the upper echelon.

Bengals franchise Smith
Justin Smith has been tagged as a franchise player by the Cincinnati Bengals.
Smith will be paid 8.5 million in 2007, and this cuts the available cap
space of the Bengals in half. This move should allow the Bengals to draft
secondary or linebacker help in the 2007 NFL Draft.

Pittsburgh defense still up in the
air?
One important factor in projecting the 2007 NFL Draft, is the defense that
the Pittsburgh Steelers will run, which could impact their early draft
picks. New head coach Mike Tomlin prefers a
Cover 2 approach, while the Steelers have
traditionally used a 3-4 System. Scott Brown of the Pittsburgh Tribune
Review
seems to indicate that the decision has not been made
on which system will be featured.

Calvin Johnson posts 4.33 40 yard
dash.
The St. Petersburg Times is reporting that
top prospect Calvin Johnson recently ran a 4.33 40
yard dash and has a 43" vertical leap. The Times reports that
Tampa Bay could be interested in Johnson.
Johnson was already the #1 prospect on the WRR Board, further cements his
position with these incredible numbers.

Vikings to cut Smoot and Johnson
Vikings CB Fred Smooth, who said last month that "Fred Smoot doesn't sit on
the bench for anyone", is
likely to be cut by the Vikings before the
end of the month. Smoot will end up somewhere, but he will have to take a
pay cut. 2006 starting quarterback Brad Johnson will also expected to be set
free. Johnson could latch on with another team as a backup (perhaps Tampa?)
or could retire. 2006 2nd Round pick, Tavarias Jackson is expected to enter
next season as the starter.

Kevin Jones disputes earlier report
Kevin Jones told the Detroit Free Press
that his recovery from a
Lisfranc fracture is on pace to be ready
for the beginning of next season, disputing an earlier report that he would
be out until the middle of next season.

NFL Draft v National Signing Day
Good article by Chase Goodbread of the Jacksonville Times-Union arguing that
while the

the National Signing Day frenzy is vilified by the main stream media.

Ginn Jr.

as it relates to the Miami Dolphins at Pick 9.

Texans Shopping David Carr
As always, great coverage of the Texans in the Houston Chronicle, who report
that the
Texans are actively shopping David Carr. Is
Minnesota a possible destination? Oakland could acquire Carr and then draft
Calvin Johnson with the first pick. The Texans are expected to try to
acquire Denver Bronco backup QB Jake Plummer to compete with Sage Rosenfels.

Chargers fire Schottenheimer
The San Diego Chargers, who already have lost offensive coordinator Cam
Cameron and defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, fired head coach Marty
Schottenheimer. It is possible that USC head coach Pete Carroll could be a
replacement.

Reid takes leave of absence from Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles have announced that head coach Andy Reid will
take a leave of absence to deal with family matters, and as such, will miss
the 2007 NFL Draft Combine. The Eagles have a solid personnel department and
this move will not effect them to the degree that it would harm other teams.

Mustain visits USC
The Mitch Mustain saga took another turn as the Morning News of
Springdale, Arkansas is reporting that he will be visiting USC within the
next two weeks. Mustain would be forced to sit out next season, but then
would have to compete with highly touted Mark Sanchez to follow John David
Booty. Stay tuned for the next part of the Mustain story

Arrington, Emmons, and Petitgout released by Giants
2006 starting linebackers Lavar Arrington and Carlos Emmons have been
released by the New York Giants. Former first round draft pick Luke
Petitgout, the starting left tackle, was also released. The moves were first
reported by Giants.com and increase the odds the Giants will draft a
linebacker on Day One of the 2007 NFL Draft.

Butch Davis and UNC make major score
In just a few months on the job, Butch Davis has improved North
Carolina's football program drastically, and today defensive tackle prospect
Marvin Austin announced he was staying in state at UNC. Austin is a huge
signing for the Tar Heels and should contribute right away.

College Football All-Star Challenge
Robert Bryant at the NFL Draft Site Blog has a great review of the
College Football All-Star Challenge. Bryant
likes QB Drew Stanton, who is the 3rd rank QB on the War Room Report board.
Also receiving good reviews was Greg Olsen, tight end from Miami (Fl). We
like Olsen as a receiver, but we feel he currently lacks the blocking skills
to play full time. Be sure to check out Robert's review!

Top prospect picks USC
Joe McKnight, the top running back in the Class of 2007 has chosen USC
over his in-state school, LSU. McKnight joins top five back Marc Tyler as
2007 USC commits and jumps into a crowded back field at Tailback U. It will
be interesting to see how the situation plays out, and if Tyler remains
committed to USC.
|
Cleveland Browns targeting Peterson?
The Houston Chronicle's John McClain is reporting that the Cleveland
Browns are very interested in running back Adrian Peterson. The Oklahoma
standout would instantly be an upgrade over Reuben Droughns, but it
remains to be seen if the Browns are willing to spend a high pick on a
running back, with so many other needs.
|
Tolliver commits to LSU
Top 2007 wide receiver recruit, Terrance Toliver of Hempstead, Texas, has
announced he will attend LSU. With the departure of both starting wide
receivers, Toliver could make an instant impact. The 6'4 receiver has been
called the best Texas prep WR since Detroit Lions star Roy Williams. LSU is
still in the running for top halfback Joe McKnight of River Ridge, LA.
Landing both Tolliver and McKnight, to go with top ten 2007 recruit WR Ron
Brooks would give new quarterback Ryan Perriloux an assortment of talented
targets.
|
Brewster follows father to Minnesota
Top 2007 quarterback recruit Clint Brewster has announced he will
withdraw his commitment to Illinois and follow his father to the University
of Minnesota, reports the Denver Post. Former Denver Broncos assistant, Tim
Brewster was recently named the head coach at Minnesota, but Clint had
announced he planned to keep his commitment to Ron Zook at Illinois.
Minnesota quarterback Bryan Cupito is graduating, but redshirt freshman Adam
Weber appears likely to start in 2007.
|
Jamal Lewis to be released?
The Ravens are expected to release Jamal Lewis before March 3rd, as he is
owed a $5 million dollar bonus on that day. Lewis has lost a lot in recent
years, and if the Ravens cut him, it makes it more likely they pursue
running back Michael Bush in the draft, as War Room Report has advocated all
along.
|
Jeff Garcia in Tampa's Plans?
The Tampa Bay Bucs may be looking to sign veteran Jeff Garcia to compete
with Chris Simms for the starting job next season, reports the Orlando
Sentinel. If the Bucs did sign Garcia, along with their recent extension of
Chris Simms' contract, it would certainly appear unlikely that they would
use their first round pick on a quarterback. Bucs' coach Jon Gruden has
shown a preference for veteran quarterbacks in the past, so Garcia makes
sense.
|
Justin Smith a target for Rams?
The Cincinnati Enquirer is reporting that Missouri native Justin Smith
could be a target for the St. Louis Rams if the Bengals do not franchise him
before the February 22nd deadline. Smith would be a solid addition across
from veteran pass rusher Leonard Little and allow the Rams to focus on
linebacker or secondary with their first pick in the 2007 draft.
|
Kevin Jones out until mid-season?
Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting that Lions RB Kevin Jones
may be out until at least mid-season as he recovers from a Lisfranc fracture
of his foot. The Lions will likely have to address the running back
situation in the off-season or in the draft.
|
Phillips the man in Dallas
Various media outlets are reporting that Jerry Jones has selected 3-4
Guru Wade Phillips to be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. The San
Diego Chargers defensive coordinator has been a head coach before, taking
both Denver and Buffalo to the playoffs. The hiring is unlikely to change
the Cowboy's offseason plan, as Phillips will maintain the 3-4 defense.
Former Dallas quarterback Jason Garrett is expected to run the offense and
it will be interesting to see how he handles Terrell Owens.
|
Ravens considering Cato June
Mike Preston of the Baltimore Sun has speculated that the Ravens may go
after Colts LB Cato June, if unable to sign Adalius Thomas. This does not
seem to be anything more then off-season rumor mill talk, as Baltimore
should resign Thomas, and June may seek a bigger payday than Baltimore would
give him.
|
Bears to Franchise Briggs?
The Chicago Sun Times is reporting that the Chicago Bears are expected to
franchise linebacker Lance Briggs. Briggs would have been one of the most
sought after free agents this season, but it now appears likely that the
Bears will keep him around. The Bears tried to resign Briggs last
off-season, but agent Drew Rosenhaus suggested Briggs play out the contract.
As long as he stays healthy in 2007, expect a huge contract for the former
Arizona Wildcat.
|
Favre to Return
The Green Bay Packers got the news that quarterback Brett Favre will
return for his seventeen NFL season. This is unlikely to change the
offseason plans for the Packers, as General Manager Ted Thompson has
expressed his desire to build the team through defense and the draft. The
only change it may make in the offseason is to reduce the number of
destinations for Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback, Jeff Garcia. ESPN's
Chris Mortensen is reporting that Favre has asked the Packers to trade for
disgruntled Oakland Raiders WR Randy Moss, but that appears unlikely.
