S2 - Reggie Nelson, Florida Reggie Nelson

NFL.com Profile

Height: 5-11
Weight: 198
40 yard dash: 4.48
Grade: 92
Strengths:
Reggie Nelson has elite coverage skills for a safety. He excels at playing deep due to his ouststanding atheltic ability, speed, and instincts. He is equally adept at zone and man coverage. He is skilled at reading the QB and using his athelciism to disrupt the play. His quickness, combined with his ball skills, allow him to intercept his share of passes.

Weaknesses:

Nelson only played 1.5 seasons of Division 1-A football after going to a Junior College for academic reasons. There are some concerns about his ability to mentally pick up the game. He is much better in pass coverage than supporting the run due to less than ideal size and bulk. He often goes for the knockout blow rather than the sure tackle and that will come to haunt him if he does not change his attitude in the NFL.

Overall:

Reggie Nelson has the best coverage skills of any of the safety prospects in the 2007 NFL Draft. He displayed terrific range at Florida and will instantly upgrade the passing defense of a team. He projects as a top free safety and should excel if placed in an offense that allows him to play deep center with a good run supporting safety.
