S3 - Michael Griffin, Texas Michael Griffin

NFL.com Profile

Height: 5-11
Weight: 202
40 yard dash: 4.45
Grade: 90
Strengths:
Michael Griffin has very solid coverage skills, with the necessary long speed to stick with most slot receivers and tight ends. Griffin has excellent agility that allows him to make very fluid cuts while in coverage. He has good ball skills and uses his leaping ability to deflect passes. He works hard in run support and is a powerful tackler. He was extremely active in starting two seasons at one of the best programs in the country.

Weaknesses:

Like many elite safety prospects, Griffin gets over aggressive at times as he goes to make the big play. He can be fooled on play action and will sometimes miss tackles when going for the big hit. He also is susceptible to reading plays incorrectly and being caught out of position. He does not have top level strength to be an "in the box" type defender at the NFL level.

Overall:

Griffin's coverage skills, combined with his relentless playing style and top notch athleticism make him a solid first round prospect at safety. While he lags behind LaRon Landry, he is closer to Reggie Nelson than some would believe. If he can bulk up at the NFL level he could become one of the best all around safeties in the league. Regardless, upon entering the NFL he projects as an immediate starter who can help his team immensely as a leader and in the passing game.
