OLB5 - Antwan Barnes, Florida International |

NFL.com
Profile |
Height: 6-0
Weight: 240
40 yard dash: 4.43
Grade: 76 |
Strengths:
One thing is for sure: Antwan Barnes can rush the quarterback. Antwan Barnes has
explosive quickness, which he uses to play literally on the other side of the
line of scrimmage. He is an athletic specimen who opened up everyone’s eyes when
he ran his 40 yard dash in 4.44 seconds, the best time ran by any outside
linebacker prospect in the 2007 NFL Draft. A very versatile prospect who could
either play at OLB in a 3-4 scheme or a 4-3 pass rusher, primarily on 3rd
down.
Weaknesses:
Antwan Barnes may not have the size required to play outside linebacker in a 3-4
scheme. He would need to bulk up a good 10-15 pounds to become an every down 3-4
linebacker. Antwan Barnes is in the same situation as former draft prospect,
Elvis Dumervil, was in last year. There are many scouts that believe he is the
dreaded “tweener” and are not sure where he would be best suited to play at the
NFL level. There is also concern surrounding the level of competition that
Antwan Barnes is used to playing against and his prognosis at the next level has
had to be adjusted to reflect this concept.
Overall:
Antwan Barnes may the ultimate “high risk, high reward” prospect in the 2007 NFL
Draft. The vast majority of NFL franchises in the past have been narrow minded
and the view on a player like Barnes was that he was too big for one position,
but not big enough for another so he fell through the cracks of what they were
looking for. In today’s NFL there are more innovative thinking coaches and in
that respect there is most definitely room for a pass rushing specialist like
Antwan Barnes. |
