Strengths:
Every year there are players drafted from a smaller
university that are revealed as playmakers in the
National Football League and fans everywhere think to themselves “How did this
guy go to _____?". The latest NFL prospect to find himself in this category
is Justin Durant. In a year where the linebacker class is watered down and
the prospects are not necessarily viewed as top-notch Justin Durant’s athletic
abilities are sure to stand out and shine. Justin Durant has terrific agility and
has excellent top end speed. He is a hard worker through traffic and he always
seems to make the tackle, regardless of where it is on the field.
Weaknesses:
Justin Durant may be an excellent MLB in pass coverage, but
he must prove that he can hold up against the run at the National Football
League level. He needs to add bulk this his frame or he is going to wear down
throughout a sixty minute contest. He played his collegiate career at Hampton,
so the level of competition that Justin Durant was facing on a week to week
basis was not of the highest caliber. The initial transition from a small school
to the National Football League could be a tough one.
Overall:
Durant projects to excel in a
"Cover 2" MLB role, or could be a weakside LB in a standard scheme. His
athleticism and coverage skills should help make the transition to the NFL
easier, but it will be a challenge to take the step up to NFL competition in
year one. Despite being from a small school, Durant should hear his name called
sometime on Day One of the draft and projects to have a solid NFL career.
