Strengths:
The War Room Report truly believes that when the smoke clears
from the 2007 NFL Draft, Marcus Thomas could potentially be the best
defensive tackle selected. Marcus Thomas may be the best “pure” pass
rusher from the defensive tackle position in this draft class. He is
an excellent blend of power and speed for a prospect that could
potentially be one of the legitimate steals in the 2007 NFL Draft.
Weaknesses:
Off the field issues surround Marcus Thomas, and these such
issues will cause him to be selected much later than his physical
tools would suggest. Using illegal drugs have been an issue with him
in the past, and with the NFL’s new code of conduct policy, Marcus
Thomas better not repeat his past transgressions or he will wind up
in the same boat as Adam “Pacman” Jones and Chris Henry. From a
physical standpoint, he must become more consistent and develop a
bigger repertoire of pass rushing moves to fulfill his potential.
Thomas also must improve his technique, particularly the use of
his hands to consistently beat NFL offensive linemen.
Overall:
From a pure athletic, on the field prospect point of view,
Marcus Thomas ranks right up there with Amobi Okoye and Alan Branch,
but the off the field issues have cost him dearly. He is reminiscent
of Warren Sapp, if I had to suggest anyone. Marcus Thomas could
afford to bulk up a little bit to max out his frame. He will need
some coaching, but the ceiling on Marcus Thomas as a DT prospect is
extremely high. His draft stock is going to vary depending on what
team you are speaking to. Could go as high as early round 2 or as
late as early round 4, but wherever he is selected, the team who
takes the chance on Marcus Thomas could reap the benefits down the
line.
